WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT VOLUNTEER PROJECTS ABROAD

In Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Peru the roles of culture, religion, and social values create uneven opportunity for women and girls. Poverty and discrimination exacerbate these impacts, widening gender gaps even further. Positive change happens through community development focused on education, personal and professional skills, and overall human empowerment and social justice. These programs provide essential support to women and girls who in turn uplift their communities. Maximo Nivel programs in Women’s Empowerment contribute to sustainable, long-term socioeconomic development.

Volunteer placements are typically with community organizations, NGOs, and government agencies. As an international volunteer, you are fully immersed with communities and project sites and get hands-on experience through your service. Programs focus on creating change around gender equality through professional and personal development, access to public and private resources, and building self-sufficiency. Your work contributes to improving the lives of women and girls through community outreach, education, skills training, fund-raising, and more.

Work Schedule

– Minimum 1 week; we recommend 2 weeks or longer
– 3-4 hours/day of volunteer work, Monday through Friday
– Work hours are morning or afternoon depending on project
– Projects may be walking distance or require public transportation

I volunteered with the women’s empowerment program at an NGO in Cusco supporting Andean women’s rights, and it was an unforgettable experience. I met incredibly inspiring women and volunteers from all over the world, built meaningful friendships, and learned so much about local culture and the real challenges these women face. Living in Cusco, enjoying the food, and improving my Spanish at the same time made the experience even more special. WHAT WILL YOU DO AS A WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT VOLUNTEER?

By contributing your time and talents, volunteers help increase economic opportunity and empower women to build independent, self-actualized futures via supportive interaction and ensuring access to resources. Volunteers work in community centers, vocational schools, NGOs, and government agencies. Depending on your individual skills and interests, your volunteer work may vary, but generally includes supporting local project staff, providing individual tutoring and training for young women and girls, fund raising, and other outreach and support activities. Your dedication and support are the most important things for the organizations and people you help. Bring your creativity, organizational skills, and self-confidence; be open-minded and be ready to pitch-in and help out.

WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT IN COSTA RICA

Women’s Empowerment projects in Costa Rica foster emotional wellness and self-care; they promote personal growth, professional development, and community well-being. Program activities may include community outreach, leading workshops, and organizing events to assist women and girls with access to resources, improving their community inclusion, and encouraging economic empowerment and career readiness. Other work may include mentoring and supporting women-owned microbusinesses.

Specific volunteer activities include mental health education such as emotional intelligence, stress management, group sharing circles, and guided meditation—helping to create reflective spaces to build personal resilience. You may also get involved with workshops and Info Desk support regarding public services, labor rights, and legal aid. As an international volunteer, you may also teach women and girls to take advantage of online AI and ESL platforms. Depending on your qualifications and experience, you may also help lead CV/resume preparation, skills and talent inventories, and help lead basic financial literacy classes and offer micro-business support.

WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT IN GUATEMALA

In Guatemala, Women’s Empowerment programs support gender equality by helping women and girls develop the skills and confidence needed for personal and professional success. Local projects focus on providing workshops promoting health, vocational skills, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy. These programs also provide emotional support and collaborate with local educational, religious, and business partners to improve community-based resources.

International volunteers engage in community outreach and awareness campaigns; and manage social media and support materials for these events. As a volunteer, you help provide information and support to new program participants, and perform needs analysis, data collection, and gather feedback about services provided. At some project sites, international volunteers also help create reflective spaces for companionship and emotional resilience—building connection and emotional well-being for women and girls in need. Volunteers also assist with making crafts, textiles, and souvenirs to support small businesses. Based on your experience and qualifications, you may also get involved with financial literacy workshops and microbusiness support.

WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT IN PERU

Women’s Empowerment programs in Peru support women’s rights and grassroots community development. Local project placements focus on sexual and reproductive rights, gender equality, and empowering women to make autonomous, informed decisions around life, family, and career. Empowerment projects also work to expand educational opportunities for indigenous women and girls in rural areas, and help to create lasting impact through improved access to public and private resources.

Volunteer work includes managing outreach and social media efforts for local NGOs and non-profit organizations. As an international volunteer, you may also get involved with community-level research and data analysis to evaluate the progress and impact of local programs—studying best practices and building data-driven insights for long-term decision making. You may also work to help expand access to online AI and ESL platforms, as well as other local and virtual learning opportunities.
