VOLUNTEER IN THE AMAZON RAINFOREST

Peru’s Amazon Jungle is one of the most biologically diverse areas on Earth. The Amazon is one of the last primary forests in the world and its ecosystem is totally unique. The species that live in the rainforest are native to the area and would disappear if their natural habitat were ruined. The Amazon Jungle is often referred to as the ‘lungs of the planet,’ but many people simply take it for granted and it is constantly under threat. This means the Amazon and its amazing natural equilibrium must be protected through research and conservation efforts.

The fate of the Amazon and the countless animals and plant species, along with the people who live there, all depend on getting this right! The task is incredibly challenging, because the necessity for agricultural expansion is the biggest driver of deforestation, which means there are important competing priorities. Reforestation is a key action to help mitigate the effects of climate change, as new trees help reduce the amount of CO2 in the air and also limit erosion. International volunteers get involved in planting trees, removing non-native species, monitoring animals, as well as community outreach and education. As a volunteer, you also learn about local tree species and the people of the area. Amazon projects have a clear impact you can directly see, and if you return in just a few years you are able to witness just how much your work literally transforms the area.

Why I Maximo Nivel

For about four weeks, I volunteered inside the Amazon Jungle. Pretty much all I have to say is that this was hands down one of the best times of my life! The jungle is incredible. We did reforestation work like planting trees and removing invasive species. As well as other necessary jobs like clearing trails for researchers and reestablishing the eating and hang out area when needed. We had the opportunity to go into town to teach English to the kids several times and that was a big highlight for me as well! I definitely recommend this program for anyone looking to do amazing work and see amazing things!

Volunteer in Amazon Reforestation

WHAT WILL YOU DO AS A JUNGLE CONSERVATION VOLUNTEER?

In the Amazon jungle, international volunteers get involved with various types of work depending on the season and current needs of the project. Your work may be focused on reforestation, organic gardening, wildlife and animal monitoring, trail maintenance, and educational workshops for local communities.

Reforestation efforts include planting trees, shrubs, and orchids, as well as removing non-native and invasive species of bamboo. Wildlife inventories include observing and counting various species of birds, insects, amphibians, and primates.

You are expected to take direction and follow the work plan that the project director dictates. You must respect the project’s work rules and the community’s way of life.

Maximo Nivel’s Amazon conservation projects are directed by environmentalists, biologists, and other local professionals. Our projects serve rural communities and volunteers often work alongside local inhabitants. Specific tasks vary greatly from project to project. Program supervisors let you work as independently as possible based on your Spanish language skills, responsibility level, and expertise. That said, you’re expected to take direction and follow the work plan that the conservation project dictates.

Note that these conservation & reforestation projects are located offsite and away from the Maximo Nivel institute. These offsite projects do not have internet access, but there is a phone in case of emergency. Our Field Managers check in with you by phone and in-person throughout your program.

If you are scheduled to work at our Amazon Reforestation & Conservation project, you receive the regular volunteer orientation on Day 1, followed by an orientation specifically for your conservation project. During your orientation, travel to/from your project is clearly explained and you receive your transportation tickets, which are included in your program fees. Depending on your project and bus schedules, you leave for your volunteer placement on Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning. Note that offsite volunteers who arrive on Monday instead of Sunday may not arrive to their volunteer site until Tuesday or Wednesday. At the end of your program, your transportation back from your project site is also included in your program fees. Volunteers usually return either Friday night or very early Saturday morning.

The Peruvian Amazon is part of the greatest rainforest in the world, and it plays an incredibly important role in the Earth’s sustainability. Over the years, deforestation began with small farmers and quickly grew with the effects of commercial logging operations. Today, with increased environmental protection and private and public initiatives, deforestation has slowed. However, your help is needed to continue these efforts and to rebuild as much of the jungle as possible.

As an international volunteer, you get involved with reforestation efforts include planting trees, shrubs, and orchids, as well as removing various non-native plant species. Your volunteer work may also include taking wildlife and animal inventories, maintaining nature trails, light construction, and assisting with educational workshops for the local community. The work you do is important to save and protect the Amazon in order to benefit future generations of people and animals.
