We understand it’s challenging to plan a trip abroad and to find real opportunities to make a difference and have impact—so join us in Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Peru and let us show you how.

Why Volunteer with Maximo Nivel?

Maximo Nivel has been offering volunteer abroad programs since 2003. We are a locally-based organization in Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Peru. We’re the real deal—we’re a feet-on-the-street, live here, work here kind of organization. We offer top-notch volunteer abroad programs and great client service. Our program fees are affordable and transparent.

While paying to volunteer might seem counter intuitive, it’s important to understand that you’re paying to be sure your program is organized and to help ensure your safety; you’re paying for housing and food; and you’re employing the in-country team that supports you during your program.

Attention and care can go a long way, especially in the development of young children. Childcare projects take place in a variety of settings ranging from orphanages to daycare facilities and community centers.

Volunteer Teaching English

Speaking English is a life-changing skill for people in developing countries. English language skills open both academic and professional opportunities, and provide a path out of poverty. Volunteer in Animal Care

Animal Care volunteers work at shelters that take in abandoned animals and provide medical treatment and daily care. What our Volunteers are saying…

“Just completed a week in Costa Rica! What a blessing to serve the children of Divino Nino!!!! I am a teacher for over 20 years and children are the same all over the world…in need of love and care and attention. I am very grateful for the opportunity to give. Thank you to the Maximo nivel staff in Costa Rica!!! I had a blast!!”
“I volunteered at a daycare center in Costa Rica and I could not have asked for a better experience. I was able to develop my career skills in speech language pathology working with the kids and also expand my Spanish speaking skills. Although I was only in Costa Rica for 2 weeks, I valued my experience and learning about the Costa Rican culture. Until next time, pura vida.”
“I volunteered with Maximo Nivel for around 8 weeks (I kept adding on so I lost count) this past February-April. Truly a life changing experience. I have never felt more welcome in a community than I did in Antigua and with Maximo Nivel. I was blessed with the opportunity to work on multiple projects and I truly felt like I made a difference in a country I will not soon forget! Maximo will always have a special place in my heart.
Hasta la próxima!”
‎Mitchell Waters‎ , Construction Volunteer in Guatemala
“Volunteering with Maximo in Antigua has been an unbelievable experience, exceeding all of my expectations. I couldn’t have asked for a better home away from home with Patsy, Juaquin and Samuel making me feel like part of the family. I had the great privilege of working at a Vet Clinic during my stay, learning from JP and his excellent staff. Seeing the trust and positive relationship they had built with each and every client was an amazing experience unique and definitely something I will strive to practice in my future jobs. I have had an incredible opportunity to grow and learn from everyone who has helped me here and I hope to take those qualities with me wherever I end up next, though I hope to be back here soon.”
“My one week placement here was the best week I’ve ever experienced in my college years life! San Lucas has opened my eyes to seeing a more better need for helping underprivileged communities and I will definitely commit to more community services and helping people in the future. Thank you Maximo Nivel for letting me work with amazing people and the caring Dr. Angel!”
“Thank you Maximo Nivel for an amazing three weeks in Cusco! During my time volunteering in a local health center I learned so many practical skills from assisting in vaccinations drives to drawing blood. The staff at the health care center were extremely welcoming and made me feel like a member of the team from the very beginning. I highly recommend anyone who is thinking of volunteering abroad to take the plunge and come experience Cusco, Peru!”
“Bittersweet leaving today – while I’m ready to go home and see my family, my coworkers, and my cat, I’m leaving a huge hole where my host family and housemates, international friends, dog friends, and Biblioteca Kallpanchis kiddos and team are back in Peru. I can’t wait to go back one day, and I can’t wait to see where Maximo Nivel might take me next!”
