When I was 16, I convinced my older brother to drive me to a volunteer event. The goal was to help clean up a local park in a neighboring town. It seemed like an easy enough way to make an impact. All I had to do was give my time. No expenses incurred.
Off we went on a frosty winter afternoon, bundled up in his car for the 45-minute drive. After 3 hours of hauling branches and collecting trash, I was beaming with a sense of pride. To top off the day, my brother bought us lunch before making the arduous trek home in peak traffic.
That evening around the dinner table, I proudly recounted my day of giving at no cost. With a smile, my brother gently reminded me… it wasn’t totally free.
Gas, lunch, water, trash bags, gloves, and other equipment—someone incurred those expenses. I had simply stepped into an operation that someone else had financed.
Years later, working as an International Director at Maximo Nivel, I often hear a question that brings me back to this story: “Why should I pay to volunteer?”
That’s a fair question to ask. You should always know exactly where your money goes when you choose to travel and serve.
However, a greater question arises—is volunteering abroad ever really “free”?
Let’s go back to the story with my brother. Consider what happens when we scale that local park project to an international effort spanning three different countries.
Instead of a neighboring town, let’s say I wanted to serve a community in a different country. Suddenly, a 45-minute car ride turns into a 6-hour flight.
Doing this in one day would no longer be realistic, so safe accommodation becomes a necessity. And instead of a single celebratory lunch, I would require daily meals for sustenance during my stay.
Of course, we cannot forget about the supplies. Bigger projects demand a bigger workforce, more equipment, and specialized training.
All of these things cost money, and if not covered, the weight, unfortunately, falls back on the community.
Choosing Responsible Service
If I asked why you are choosing to volunteer, your answer would likely be something along the lines of wanting to make a tangible difference in an underserved community. You’d probably want to do this in the most unburdensome way possible. That means never becoming a financial or administrative stress on the communities hosting you.
Local schools, animal rescues, health clinics, and construction sites often operate on limited resources. Humanitarian Fund
In each host country, Maximo Nivel manages a monthly humanitarian fund, which is distributed to the projects and communities we work with. Funds are directed toward essential, non-consumable infrastructure, such as construction projects, furniture, medical equipment for clinics, and lots more, ensuring the most in-need projects have resources to help them remain sustainable long after your volunteer placement ends.
