Why I Maximo Nivel

I attended Maximo for two weeks in their Cusco location. I chose the intensive Spanish program with 4 hours of group class and 2 hours of private class per day. The Maximo Nivel Spanish school in Cusco, Peru is located on the main commercial street of Avenida El Sol. It sits directly across from Q’oricancha–the Temple of the Sun and the most sacred site in the Inca Empire. The school and campus are just 3 blocks from Cusco’s Plaza de Armas, right in the historical center and close to shopping, restaurants, and nightlife.

The Maximo building includes 4 floors with 22 classrooms, a snack bar, and a computer lab. The school’s spacious common areas are great for meeting up with friends and making new ones. There always lots of free time activities and cultural events to take part in. The institute is open 7 days/week, including holidays.

THE SPANISH OF PERU

Peruvian Spanish has three distinct accents–Andean, Coastal, and Amazonian. The Andean dialect is most similar to the standard dialects of Ecuador and Bolivia, and the one you become most familiar with in Cusco. New Spanish speakers always agree it is rather easy to understand and learn. Unlike Central American Spanish, “tu” as opposed to “vos” is most commonly used among peers, and “ustedes” is used in place of “vosotros”.

Peru acknowledges the strong indigenous influence of its people with three official languages–Spanish, Quechua, and Aymara. The Spanish spoken in Peru sometimes includes small pieces of indigenous vocabulary, and Peruvian Spanish also has great slang such as “bacan” meaning “cool” or “awesome,” “chamba” meaning “job,” and “pata” meaning “friend.”

Peruvians tend to be traditional and closely value family and relationships. They also love a great fiesta and Peruvians know how to throw a great party! Both ‘saving face’ and respect for the collective are prioritized and therefore conformity to the group is important. This makes Peru the perfect option if you are looking for a true immersion experience while you learn Spanish abroad. Once you get comfortable living among Peruvian locals, you pick up the lingo and customs, and fall right in line with the culture.

Spanish for Special Purposes
Spanish for Special Purposes (SSP) includes courses in Medical Spanish and Spanish for Business. SSP teachers are some of our most experienced instructors and have additional expertise in Business and Healthcare. SSP programs are intended for medical students, traveling doctors and nurses, and business people who need specialized Spanish for their careers. SSP Classes are best taught in a 2-hour per day format.
