Special Education Internships

Special needs include students with visual impairments, hearing impairments, physical impairments and developmental disabilities.

Special education placements are usually at private schools. Through working as a teacher’s aide, conducting your own lessons, working with individual students, and teacher-to-teacher mentoring, you grow as an educator and learn about the education system available to students with special needs in developing countries.

As you work through your internship placement, you come to understand special needs curricula and standards, obstacles faced by schools in providing quality special education, as well as family challenges. You gain practical real-world experience in leading educational activities and managing a classroom. You also practice techniques in special education and methods for measuring students’ development.

If you are an expert in American Sign Language, you can bring English to the special needs classroom—helping hearing impaired students learn English as a second language. Interns must be proficient in ASL.

Intermediate Spanish is required to be effective in a special education placement. If your Spanish language skills are not at this level, we offer online Spanish classes and our Native Spanish Program to bring your skills up to the appropriate level.

We encourage you to use your skills and be creative! Be open to constructive feedback about your performance.

What our Interns are saying…

“As a special education intern, I had the opportunity to work in a special education school a couple of miles outside of central Cusco. I worked primarily in the first grade classroom. This experience was extremely rewarding as I was able to form very strong relationships with not only the students, but also with many of the teachers. I helped plan and teach lessons to the class and helped supervise the students. I also had the opportunity of partaking in school festivities, such as holiday celebrations. Working as an intern could sometimes be very challenging given the severity of some of the children’s disabilities and special needs. However, it was an amazing experience to be able to work with the students and help them learn and grow as individuals despite the challenges I faced along the way. The school community is extremely welcoming and working at the school leaves afternoons free to explore the amazing and beautiful city of Cusco. I truly felt like I became a part of the school community and had an experience I will never forget.”
Allie, Special Education Intern (Peru)
