What to Expect
Maximo Nivel completely customizes your program according to your group’s needs and goals. Our professional Program Managers take care of you and guide you through the process of bringing your group down—from pre-arrival planning to delivery of the program on-site. We’re with you every step of the way, 24/7, end-to-end. That’s our promise!
Your dedicated Program Manager guides you through all the steps—getting group members together, buying flights, project placements, class selection, Spanish language placement, and adding any extra services your group might need—this ranges from private transportation to special weekend tours and excursions. We set up your entire experience—that’s what we’re here for.
Note that group programs usually run Monday through Friday. Accommodation fees include a Sunday arrival and a Saturday departure, which is one day before your program begins and one day after your program ends. That being said, most groups customize their program in one way or another. For example, groups often like to arrive several days early or extend their stay for several days after their program ends. This gives you more time to comfortably explore and see more of your host country, which you’ve traveled so far to see. That’s all normal, and we’ll help you plan for this prior to arrival.
Don’t forget, one of the big advantages of organizing your group program through Maximo Nivel is you have full access to our first-rate facilities 7 days/week, including holidays. This includes the Maximo Nivel “Paquete” of services.
Sample Group Itinerary
Airport pick-up is included in all of our programs. Maximo Nivel’s professional drivers will meet you outside of baggage claim as you exit the airport—just look for the yellow smiley face flag
. You will receive a Welcome Folder detailing your accommodations, orientation time, and our Emergency contact numbers. Depending on your time of arrival, you come to the Maximo institute or go directly to your accommodations.
Once in-country, your group passes from your dedicated Program Advisor to your dedicated Field Manager. Your Field Manager is responsible for your in-country program and they are the daily program manager for all classes, projects, and logistics. The Field Manager is also your 24/7 emergency contact. Field Manager at Maximo Nivel have 2 primary missions in life: 1) Deliver a great experience for your group, and 2) Improve impact at our community service projects.
On your first full day, your host family or your Field Manager shows you the best way to get to/from your accommodations and the Maximo Nivel institute. Your orientation includes specific details about your program, a health and safety review, and a short walking tour to be sure you’re familiar with the area around the Maximo institute. During your orientation, you also take a Spanish placement exam.
If you’re taking Spanish classes, your course is either scheduled during the morning session (9:00AM – 1:00PM) or during the afternoon session (2:00PM – 6:00PM). Which session you study in depends on the number of students enrolled and the Academic Director’s weekly plan.
During the week, you start the day with breakfast at your accommodations, generally around 7:00AM to 8:00AM. If you have program is running on the AM schedule, you head to the Maximo institute either by bus, taxi, or on foot. If you have program is running on the PM schedule, your mornings are free for a number of different activities. You can spend some time with your host family, explore the city, take excursions or hang out at the Maximo institutes, use the facilities and take part in cultural activities.
There are plenty of great restaurant options around Maximo Nivel. Be sure to get out and try some of the local dishes and do some looking around.
Many of our groups add private transportation to their program in order to keep the group members together and to make project logistics and getting around fast and easy. If private transportation is included, you are picked up at your host family each morning and back again in the evening.
For groups studying Spanish, we can add special lectures to your program for those looking to get more cultural instruction. Just let us know and we can bring in guest speakers or create workshops as needed!
In the evening, you have dinner at your accommodations. If you’re staying with host-family, after dinner is when families like to sit and talk about their day and hear about yours—remember, this is important conversation practice and helps you become more involved in the daily routine of your host family. After dinner, you’re free to check out the town and meet up with friends. You have your own key to the family-stay house and you’re free to come and go as you please. However, we ask you respect the routine and house rules of the family you’re staying with.
Note> High School and youth programs have much stricter housing rules and curfews to follow.
Weekends are free and are the perfect time to get out and see some of the great destinations and things to do in Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Peru. Go whitewater rafting, climb a volcano, hike through the mountains, or hang out and get some hammock time.
If you’re looking for a great highlights tour, check out our Mini Adventures. These 1-week add-on programs combine travel and accommodations that bring you to the “must-see” places in Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Peru.
Your Field Manager leads a feedback and checkout session for your group. You need to make sure you check-out, collect your Maximo Nivel t-shirt, and leave us your feedback card. Please be sure to say goodbye!
Our program participants are always mixed between looking forward to going home and telling friends and family about their great adventure and realizing they’re going to miss their new home in Latin America! Remember, you’re always welcome to come back and see us again!
Please note that airport drop-off is not included in the program fee, unless your group has selected the private transportation option. Of course we’re always happy to help organize a lift back to the airport.
