Costa Rica’s tropical climate and mountainous regions make it the perfect landscape for coffee production. Because their beans are among the best in the world, you’ve probably seen Costa Rica stamped across a bag of coffee or two. But if you’re already drinking these imported blends, wouldn’t you enjoy them more from the source?

If you have the pleasure of exploring Costa Rica, don’t pass up the opportunity to try a few local coffee shops! Yes, the country is also famous for its popular eco and adventure travel industries, so you may have been picturing yourself ziplining above the rainforest or learning to surf. There’s time for that too, but don’t forget to slow down and sip. Sitting down at cafés is a great way to explore any new city.

You’ll get a sense of Costa Rican flavors as well as the local community. Whether you have work to do and need Wi-Fi, are hoping to get out and practice your Spanish or simply prefer to people watch, there’s no better vantage point than the window of a café. And if you find a favorite and become a regular, you’ll likely make friends with expats and locals alike.

Deciding where to stop, however, can seem overwhelming in a city of San José’s size. Between the tourism and commerce concentrated in the country’s capital, coffee shops and cafés aren’t hard to find. So, if you’re looking for a pick-me-up before heading to your volunteer placement or a busy day at your internship, here are five local spots worth checking out, and none of them are too far from Maximo Nivel!

Café Miel

How to Get There

First stop: Café Miel. Though it may not look like much from the outside, when the steel roll-up opens each morning, you get a peak of the café’s homey interior. And its success is simple—locally sourced coffee, homemade pastries and desserts, and an inviting space. So, grab your Spanish homework or that Márquez novel you’ve been slogging through and stay a while.

Café Miel might not have a full menu, but don’t let that dissuade you from stopping by. The coffee is brewed fresh, and they have a wide variety of empanadas and fresh sweets. As a carrot cake connoisseur, I have to recommend a slice. They also make fresh lemonade and flaky ham and cheese croissants!

De Acá Cafetería

But if you’ve worked up an appetite and are hoping for something heartier, De Acá Cafetería is also worth a visit. The prices are reasonable, the view from upstairs is exceptional and the cuisine is 100% vegan! Yes, you can find delicious meat-free options in Latin America. They serve gluten-free items too.

Whether you’re in the mood for matcha, coffee or something fresh and fruity, De Acá has a lot to choose from. This quiet café also serves up great grilled cheese sandwiches and burgers made entirely from vegan alternatives. If you’re looking for less, there’s also a tempting dessert case. And don’t forget to pause and peruse the local artwork on your way up the spiral staircase.

Café Otoya

Next up: Café Otoya Bistró. This local haunt lives up to its slogan—“somos más que café.” Another great place to spend time if you’re a bit on the hungrier side, this café serves up more than typical espresso drinks. From Sunday brunch to the full bar, Otoya Bistró is a good bet for any time of day or occasion. But don’t worry, if you’ve come for the coffee, it also won’t disappoint!

Located in a beautiful, historic part of San José, Café Otoya is a relaxing place to bring a book, a friend or a date. If weather permits, try to grab a table outside. Start your day with a smooth cappuccino and a pinto bowl or end it with a bruschetta plate and a glass of red wine. And don’t miss out on live music nights!

Cafeoteca Coffee Shop

But if it’s all about the coffee for you, definitely don’t skip Cafeoteca Coffee Shop. Cafeoteca takes the quality of its coffee seriously. This hidden gem has worked hard to foster long-term relationships with local growers and their dedication doesn’t stop there. Don’t hesitate to ask your barista for recommendations. The staff really knows their stuff!

Take some time to explore the extensive pour over menu. Or, if you don’t like your coffee black, Cafeoteca makes the smoothest lattes and cappuccinos you’ll ever taste. And who said you have to limit yourself to just one cup? Either enjoy the cafés eclectic interior, filled with coffee machinery from all over the world, or step into the serene garden out back.

Café La Mancha

How to Get There

And last but not least: Café La Mancha. This specialty coffee house not only rests in the heart of San José but has also stolen the hearts of many local patrons. Tucked into the courtyard of a historic warehouse, La Mancha is more than a coffee shop—it’s an experience. And despite its quirky name, nothing could stain its sparkling reputation.

When it comes to the methods of coffee-making, if you can imagine it, you can probably order it here. The cold brew is bold and refreshing. Or maybe you’ll be in the mood for a silky cortado. Whatever you’re drinking, don’t forget to stop and look at the local art. There’s also an eclectic collection of books and records for sale. But no matter where you find your perfect cup, San José will leave you spoiled for choice. So start exploring one sip at a time!
