Volunteer Abroad

Maximo Nivel’s volunteer programs in Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Peru provide unique opportunities to live and work in Latin America, while giving back to the global community and immersing yourself in the local culture.

Have you dreamed about traveling to a developing country, spending your time in a meaningful way, and immersing yourself in a new culture? Volunteering abroad is a life-changing experience where you expand your horizons in a way that could never be achieved in a classroom.

We understand it’s challenging to plan a trip abroad and to find real opportunities to make a difference and have impact—so join us in Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Peru and let us show you how.

Why Volunteer with Maximo Nivel?

Maximo Nivel has been offering volunteer abroad programs since 2003. We are a locally-based organization in Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Peru. We’re the real deal—we’re a feet-on-the street, live here, work here kind of organization. We offer top-notch volunteer abroad programs and great client service. Our program fees are affordable and transparent.

While paying to volunteer might seem counter intuitive, it’s important to understand that you’re paying to be sure your program is organized and to help ensure your safety; you’re paying for housing and food; and you’re employing the in-country team that supports you during your program.

Volunteer Working with Children

Working with Children is the right place for caring and responsible people that want to improve the lives of underprivileged kids. Attention and care can go a long way, especially in the development of young children. Childcare projects take place in a variety of settings ranging from orphanages to daycare facilities and community centers.

Volunteer Teaching English

Speaking English is a life-changing skill for people in developing countries. English language skills open both academic and professional opportunities, and provide a path out of poverty. Teaching English projects involve students of all ages and can take place in schools, churches, and community centers. You can make a real difference by teaching English.

Volunteer in Conservation & Environment

Costa Rica, Guatemala and Peru are 3 of the most bio-diverse countries on earth. You volunteer alongside biologists and other local experts working on very worthwhile projects including protection of endangered species, reforestation, environmental awareness, and sustainable farming.

Volunteer in Medical & Healthcare

Medical and healthcare programs provide volunteers the opportunity to work alongside doctors, nurses, physical therapists, and other healthcare professionals. Depending on your training, volunteer placements take place in hospitals, clinics, assisted living facilities, and HIV centers. Volunteer programs are led by Maximo Nivel’s on-staff Medical Specialist.

Volunteer in Construction

Construction volunteers work on building or repairing schools, community centers, and homes for children. Construction work is physically demanding, including digging, carrying bricks, mixing cement, plastering, painting, and cleaning. Volunteers are led by Maximo Nivel’s professional, on-staff Construction Foreman.

Volunteer in Animal Care

Animal Care volunteers work at shelters that take in abandoned animals and provide medical treatment and daily care. Volunteers bathe, brush and exercise the animals, as well as provide basic training, clean cages, and give love and attention. Limited spaces are also available at our exotic animal care facility in Guatemala and our university-run zoo in Peru.

Volunteer in Eco-Agriculture

Eco-Agriculture programs place volunteers in small, sustainable coffee-producing communities in Costa Rica and Guatemala. Volunteer work varies by season and includes all aspects of coffee production. You work outdoors in all weather conditions and the work is physically demanding, involving lifting and the use of tools.

Volunteer with Indigenous Communities

Indigenous Culture volunteers live in small, rural villages with complete immersion into traditional, native life. Volunteers work and live with an indigenous family—caring for animals and livestock, doing agricultural work, weaving, assisting with local construction projects, and working with children at the local school.
